1) Prepare Your Space
Before anything else, open your doors and windows. This invites fresh energy in and gives the old, stagnant energy a clear path out. Take a moment to stand in the quiet and feel the space settle.
2) Set Your Intention
Hold the sage bundle in your hands. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and speak (silently or aloud) the purpose of your ritual. Your intention can be simple, such as:
-
“I release what no longer serves me.”
-
“I welcome clarity, peace, and protection.”
-
“May this space be cleansed and renewed.”
Let the intention anchor you. The sage is simply the tool—your intention is the power behind the ritual.
3) Light the Sage
-
Hold the bundle at a slight angle.
-
Light the tip until it catches flame.
-
Let it burn for a few seconds, then gently blow it out so it smolders.
The rising smoke represents movement, transformation, and release.
4) Begin the Cleansing
Move slowly and mindfully through your space.
-
Guide the smoke toward corners, doorways, and areas that feel heavy.
-
Move with purpose, letting your intention lead your steps.
-
If cleansing yourself, sweep the smoke from head to toe, front and back, as if brushing away old energy.
You can speak your intention again as you move, reinforcing the energy you’re calling in.
5) Close the Ritual
When you feel complete:
-
Return to your starting point.
-
Offer a final moment of gratitude—for the cleansing, for the clarity, for the shift.
-
Extinguish the sage by pressing the burning end into sand, dirt, or a heat‑safe dish until the embers are fully out.
Take one last deep breath and feel the difference in the space around you.
Store Properly
Keep your sage in a dry place with good airflow so it doesn’t mold. A small basket or open container works well.
Safety Notes
-
Never leave burning sage unattended.
-
Keep away from pets, children, and anyone sensitive to smoke.
-
If you have respiratory issues, consider using our Nancy's Purifying Sage Mist instead of burning sage.
